During Lent, #StElizabethReese students gather in the worship space to pray the Step Up Close to Jesus Stations of the Cross for Young People together. This will be done every Thursday at 1 PM throughout Lent with the school students leading the prayers. Everyone is welcome to join. Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. At Mass today, our students and staff received ashes as a sign of repentance and mortality. During these 40 days of Lent, Catholics put a particular emphasis on prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Staff and students are focusing their efforts in Lent on refraining from complaining and negative talk. We are looking to encourage and uplift each other rather than break down. Today 3rd and 4th grade (all 2 of them) talked about the different names for the day before Ash Wednesday and it's significance. The different names include Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Mardis Gras, and Pancake Day. We talked about how the early Christians needed to get rid of fats and products from flesh animals like milk, eggs and butter. The best way to do this was to make pancakes We made ours in the colors associated with Mardis Gras! #soarlikeaneagle #letyourlightshine #mardigras #OurCatholicSchools #CatholicSchoolDifference #pancakes
Mrs. Willertz led our 5th-8th graders in a Socratic Seminar on O Captain, My Captain by Walt Whitman this afternoon, asking what themes they found in the poem, what they thought was going on in the poem and how it made them feel. Incorporating seminars into the curriculum is part of our partnership with the Institute for Catholic Liberal Education which involves reading a piece of literature and digging deep into it asking questions below surface level, finding connections you never thought of. Students have also done seminars with song lyrics, as they are poems.
